Day 2 was a glorious sail in 15 - 25 kt breezes........a great shakedown, destination Sheboygan to wait for a weather window across the lake. I am mildly disturbed by a forecast of 30 kt winds with waves building to 5 - 8 ft.
Let me explain: Lake Michigan waves are not these lovely big ocean waves. Instead of rolling nicely they rear up like walls of water, more of a square waveform. And this is a CRUISE after all, not a race. That said, I am also concerned about being in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence in September so time is of the essence.
Whisper is still shaking off the cobwebs and so is her skipper.......literally and figuratively.
So the journey continues up the west shore of Lake Michigan, in the lee of the land, until the weather moderates for the dash across. Call me chicken.......See if I care!

Hey, man! I haven't had a wireless connect to day and for some reason you are not in my PDA directory, so I missed saying Happy Birthday while it still was your birthday! So... Happy Birthday Plus a Few Hours? That get it for the moment. I am envious of your journey, discomforts of life aboard not-with-standing.
ReplyDeleteFor my part, I spent half of Wednesday driving to Sedona where, while you were reefing the main (or somesuch knotty-type stuff) I was rock-bashing somebody else's new Jeep on the Broken Arrow trail up into the red-rock cliffs surrounding Sedona -- amazing! Then a late start and a fast dash across to the CA, and on Thursday at sunset put toes and nose in saltwater for the first time in two years, I think, at Laguna Beach. Staying, however, at the marina in Dana Point, which is filled with useless plastic that as near as I can figure never toes out of the harbor. Oh, well. I own two boats that never even get in the water anymore, so what I am talking about? Depending on how my next New York trip stacks up, I'm intending to be in Maine (having postponed it now at least three times) before Labor Day and for one to two weeks into the month.
What is your eta in Maine? Where will you put in on your way down the coast? I suspect your more concerned about getting our the St. Lawrence and around the Cape Breton bend in the road before thinking about that, though, right? Remember the Farley Mowatt book, "The Boat That Wouldn't Float"? Don't replicate his misadventures in the St. Lawrence.
While visiting with friends in Laguna tonight, a guy comes in who spent many years sailing on "our" coast, and we kept each other chatted up to the utter boredom of everyone around us!
Stay warm and dry.
Your big bro, Bruce
(this week is the 40th Anniversay of Woodstock! I went from Basic Training at Fort Dix on a 3-day pass -- stayed 5 days, remember parts of one or two. Lime green bell bottoms! Ahhh, sweet cannabis, where are thee now?)
